Eight

“Dude, you are out of shape,” Kirk teased Keith as they trampled into the cabin. Keith had exaggerated his groans on the ride back from the slopes, but he was sore.

“I’m not out of shape. You’re just super in-shape,” he grumbled.

“Must be all those push-ups I’ve been doing lately.”

Sue dug her elbow into his side and shot him a look while everyone laughed. Shedding their jackets, gloves, and boots, they all shared a collective sigh of relief as the warmth from the cabin enveloped them.

The cozy feeling didn’t last long. Phoebe walked out into the foyer with a troubled look on her face. Keith was immediately worried that the stalker had managed to get through the discreet guards he had watching the cabin until he realized that she was the only one coming out to greet them.

“Andrea?” he asked immediately. Maybe she had taken a nap or was in the shower.

Phoebe sucked in her lower lip and shook her head. “I don’t know. She went out for a walk, but that was hours ago. I tried to call her cellphone. I know she took it with her, but it goes straight to voicemail.

It wasn’t freezing outside, but it was cold enough that being outside for several hours with rigorous activity to keep her warm was troubling. If she wasn’t back yet, then something might have happened to her. “I’m going back out to look for her,” Keith said instantly, but everyone else was already putting their boots back on.

Nobody was laughing now.

There were several marked trails that were near the cabin but also plenty of well-worn paths that were not marked. The group each took a trail, but Keith took one of the more isolated unmarked paths that he knew led in a twisted path toward the lake. The area was expansive enough that it didn’t take long before he could no longer hear the others calling out Andrea’s name. Thirty minutes in and he no longer had cell service under the thicket of the trees.

“Andrea,” he bellowed desperately. His thoughts were growing darker by the second. What if Phoebe’s stalker, unable to get to her, had taken his rage out on the unsuspecting woman wandering in the woods. What if the reason that Andrea wasn’t answering was because she couldn’t. Because she’d been taken, or even worse, she was dead?

“Keith?”

His name seemed no more than a faint whisper in the wind, and he froze and strained to hear. “Andrea?”

“Keith! I’m here. I’ve twisted my ankle.”

Relief swept through him, and he plunged toward the sound of her voice. “Keep talking to me, sweetheart. Let me follow the sound of your voice.”

“There’s no freaking cell service out here, and I swear to God, I think there are bears. I mean, I know that they’re supposed to be hibernating, but if I didn’t see a bear, then I saw big foot, and I’m going to be super pissed if I get eaten by some mythological monster.”

She was angry and not scared. That was good.
